Frequently Asked Questions - RSS Feeds

What is RSS?

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an Internet-standard, XML-based format for content distribution. It is particularly well-suited for distributing fast-changing content, such as news stories. Before RSS, the traditional ways to access news stories were to either have them emailed directly to you, or for you to visit each source's web site periodically, to see if any new stories had been posted. CreditRiskMonitor has always supported both of those methods of receiving news. Now, RSS feeds give you an alternative way to stay on top of your news from CreditRiskMonitor (and news from other sources as well). We now offer RSS feeds for most of the active public companies that we follow. Just look for the orange "RSS" button at the bottom of the "Company News" section of any report. If that button appears at the bottom of the page, then we offer an RSS feed for that company's news stories.

How do I use RSS?

There are a number of ways to access RSS feeds. You can install an RSS reader that displays RSS feeds from the Web sites you select, enabling you to view hundreds of headlines at once. By automatically retrieving updates, RSS readers allow you to view new stories soon after they are published. After installing the news reader, you can "subscribe" to an RSS feed at a web site with the following steps:
  1. Right-click on the orange "RSS" button.
  2. Select "Copy Shortcut" or "Copy Link Location" to copy the location (URL) of the RSS feed to the Windows clipboard.
  3. Following the instructions for your particular RSS reader, paste that link into the appropriate field in your RSS reader.
An alternative to downloading a dedicated news reader is to use a Web-based news reader. For example, My Yahoo! users can now add RSS feeds directly to their personal page.

Where can I get an RSS Reader?

There are many readers available and most are free. Some popular RSS Readers are listed below for your convenience. To get a more complete list, search for "RSS reader" with any popular search engine.
